On May 16, 1796, Morris wrote Washington from London that some "indispensable circumstances" had again called him to Switzerland and that he would, out of a "sense of propriety" reverse his way, traveling through Germany to avoid going through unfriendly French territory where, in fact, he was still person non grata. That same day, he mentions Adèle in his diary for the first time in nearly a year: "I walk out to Kensington. Madame de Graave tells me of an intended marriage between Madame de Flahaut and M. de Souza, also of a coldness between him and her respecting the Duke of Orléans I presume that he [the duke] has been un peu mystérious and she un peu légère à cet égard."
